West Marine is committed to being the best supplier of boating-related products and services that provide outstanding value to every customer and now offers classes taught by Captain's Choice, LLC.
In addition to offering classes at area marinas and onboard our vessel, the "Wofford". we have now teamed up with West Marine of Latham, New York to give people even more options for their boating education.
We are trying to reach as many novice and seasoned boaters as possible to promote safety on the water and share our passion for boating.
The areas lakes, rivers and canals provide us with a unique environmental resource that is rich in history, easily accessible, and should be enjoyed and protected by everyone.
Be legal, be safe, and be ready. Boating season is just around the corner! New York State law requires anyone operating a PWC (personal water craft) to have a Safe Boating Certificate. Get yours now through Captain's Choice, LLC and West Marine.
All of our captains are New York State certified 8 Hour Safety Course instructors and USCG Licensed Master Captains. We have the knowledge and experience to make you a safer boater because, let's face it, boating is not only about getting out there, it's also about making it back safely.
Classes will be held on the last Saturday of March and April, 3/27/10 and 4/24/10.

This course is recommended for all boaters. in New York, you MUST attend a classroom course and hold a Safety Certificate (issued by the state) to:
- Operate a personal watercraft (jet ski), REGARDLESS OF AGE.
- Operate a motorboat between the ages of 14 and 17 years old.
This comprehensive boating course, approved by the National Association of Boating Law Administrators, teaches the foundations of safe boating operation and includes the following basics:
* Boat operation * Accidents and Emergencies
* Boats and Motors * Equipment
* Navigating Waters * Personal Watercraft (jet ski)
* Rules of the Road * Safe Powering/Loading
This course is being offered throughout the Capital Region, Saratoga and Lake George areas.
Training For All Boat Owners
This course is designed for the novice or seasoned boater and teaches boating safety and operation in the following areas:
- Rules and regulations of safe boat operation
- Safety and equipment
- Accidents and emergencies
- Navigating on the waters, including the Locks and Canals
- Charts and plotting a course
- Docking a boat
- Trailering a boat
- Safe loading, stability and buoyancy
- Boat maintenance
- Using VHF Radios, GPS, Chart Plotters/Depth Finders and Radar
- Everything you would like to know about boating
This course will be taught onboard the "Wofford", our 50-foot charter boat with extensive "hands on" training, as well as on your personal vessel. We want to take you out in fair and foul weather, in daylight and in darkness, in single and multi-engine vessels to give you the training and confidence you need to be a safer boater.
Classes will be held on every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6 to 8 pm for a four-week period. Other times can be arranged.
